Any suggestions for landing strikes on a guy who keeps backing up? I was having some trouble with this in my last fight. I know I could have cut off the cage more, but any other suggestions to help close the distance on someone who keeps moving back? Thanks guys!

hey guys, you didn't write what kind of fight it is so I will assume kickboxing or muay thai. if its mma I have a few more options. here are a few options I usually use: 1) hitting him with low volume combos - 1 or 2 strikes and learning where and how he backs up while letting him get used to only 1-2 strikes. after I see he got used to it I start firing longer combos - 3 and above shots based of what I learned from watching him backing up, add kicks at the end to get longer reach and surprise him. 2) don't play his game. you don't need to chase him. just back off first and make him come to you. the more patience fighter will make the other guy come after him. if he is a good counter striker making him come after you will make him fight at a way he likes less. 3) cutting the ring! I know you said it but its important as a striker to get better at this. I have to get to work but I would be happy to talk more about this later. if you have questions or something to say I would love it.

Thanks for the reply! I was referring specifically to mma. I'd like to know the other options you mentioned you have for mma if you dont mind sharing. Thank you again!

sorry it took me a few days to answer. we had an mma fight for one of my students last night so I wasn't near the computer for a few days. in mma it very much depends on your game plan. what are you interested in doing ? striking on the feet? taking him down?

No worries! In my last fight the game plan was to use my strikes to set up the takedown. So this is where closing the distance was becoming an issue.
